February 2021

A Message from our President & CEO

Full Steam Ahead!

Greetings,

We are almost two full months into 2021 and have already accomplished so much, both as an organization and as a workforce system. First, the 2021 WINC Institute, hosted by PhilaWorks and key WINC stakeholders from the WINC project, was a success! The three-day conference surpassed its 2019 registration and included national speakers, all committed to the work that WINC is doing to support, increase, and advance the participation of women in nontraditional careers. Alongside that success, the first installment of the ApprenticeshipPHL Symposium hosted a 10-day lineup of subject matter experts offering their knowledge about how we can utilize apprenticeships to promote economic recovery, equity, & growth.

Our February workforce focus is on youth and the undeniable power of partnerships. All month long, we are recognizing the many ways in which both help position Philadelphia’s residents to compete for the jobs of the future and strengthen the talent pipeline of local and regional businesses. Investing in our city’s youth and young adults is essential to the strength of our local economy. We are excited to see how our intentional investment and ongoing commitment to them and to their professional development will shape the fast changing landscape of Philadelphia’s workforce.

Powerful partnerships are the foundation of Philadelphia's workforce system. Without them, all of our work would be in vain. It is through our public/private relationships that we have been able to respond to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and remain hopeful for a bright future for the individuals and businesses of Philadelphia. Whether through innovative smart workforce solutions, business pipeline development, or resources to help residents thrive, our partnerships are vital to our organization's work and creating positive impacts on our great city.

As we look forward to spring, let us continue on with the same confidence and resilience that we have shown over the past year, proving that we are truly better together. We are currently looking forward to a number of premier hiring events from our corporate partners and city-wide initiatives to increase access and equity around skills strengthening for job seekers. It's full steam ahead at Philadelphia Works!

Stay safe and well,
H. Patrick Clancy

Through the Workforce Solutions Grant, the City of Philadelphia is investing $1 million in organizations and programs that will intentionally identify, elevate, and address the specific challenges Black, brown, and other historically disadvantaged residents face when preparing for and entering the workforce.

For three days, tradeswomen and allies learned best practices, networked and celebrated the resilience of Philadelphia-area tradeswomen during the challenges of this past year. They attended workshops on best practices for recruiting and retaining women, practical safety and health tips for tradeswomen, and mentorship models to retain tradeswomen. Tradeswomen shared about their experiences, and discovered new resources to encourage and support more youth and adult women to build their careers in the trades in construction, manufacturing and transit.
