Coronavirus (COVID-19) is impacting the health, safety, and economic stability of communities across the globe. We are all navigating the downsizing and closures of businesses, schools, and non-profit organizations across the United States. The societal implications of COVID-19 are unprecedented, and unfortunately, with no clear ending in sight, many employers will be forced to temporarily or permanently lay off staff. This is particularly true for industries such as hospitality and retail, that depend on consumer spending to meet payroll and facility operating costs.
According to Ed Grose, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association, some hotels in the city are experiencing occupancy rates as low as 10%. For more information on how COVID-19 is affecting workers in the hospitality industry, read the full article here.
Philadelphia Works, the City’s workforce development board, which funds and manages local PA CareerLink® centers, has been working hard to maintain the continuity of services for residents and local businesses during this time.
For Philadelphia Works, the health and safety of the communities that we serve every day is our top priority. We are continuously reviewing and responding to local, state, and federal recommendations to inform our response to the rapidly changing directives regarding COVID -19. Additionally, we are ensuring that our decisions are in alignment with the offices of Mayor James Kenney and Governor Tom Wolf.
To that end, and until further notice, we have canceled all in-person events and meetings. We have also closed all local PA CareerLink® centers and Philadelphia Works’ corporate office in One Penn Center at Suburban Station.
Philadelphia Works staff and partners have been working hard to maintain the continuity of services and we appreciate your patience during this time. We will all continue to operate remotely and fulfill our mission, responding to business needs and increasing economic opportunity for all Philadelphia residents.
