Fast Facts and Job Openings Data: Philadelphia Labor Market in 2019

Philadelphia, PA, USA, February 12, 2019

Philadelphia city experienced an increase in employment to 688,375 – an increase of 5,901 more employed from the previous month. The unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. Over 35,000 individuals were unemployed in Philadelphia in February 2019.


There were 32,096 web advertised job openings in Philadelphia city in January 2019. Job openings advertised on the web decreased by 153 in Philadelphia city compared to December 2018. The number of postings:

increased by 11 percent compared to the previous month, December 2018
increased by 12 percent compared to a year previous, January 2018

Comparing the ratio of unemployed Philadelphians to web-advertised job openings (a proxy for the supply of workers versus the demand), there were 1.05 unemployed persons per advertised position. There were 44,286 unemployed Philadelphians in January 2018.

Since the beginning of the job postings series in 2010, the highest number of postings was registered in August 2012 at 35,336; the lowest number of postings was in December 2011 at 22,720 postings.

Labor Force: The labor force increased over the previous month and increased from the previous year. Over 723,000 individuals were in labor force in February 2018. Three-thousand seven hundred twenty-three more workers participated in the labor force compared to the previous month, and over 20,226 more residents were in the labor force- compared to the previous year. 

Job Openings by Major Occupational Groups

Computer and Mathematical occupations; Management, and Healthcare Practitioners had the largest number of postings – accounting for 43 percent of all jobs advertised.

Business and Financial Operations, Office and Administrative Support positions, and Sales and Related occupations accounted for another 28 percentage of total openings in January 2019.

The biggest decline in job openings by major occupation was in Healthcare Practitioners. These fell by 205 postings.
